Executive function challenges at home

Home is supposed to be where you rest and recharge. But for many adults with executive function challenges, including those with ADHD, autism, dyspraxia, or dyslexia, home can feel like just another place where you’re falling behind.

The washing that’s been on the airer for four days. The kitchen that was clean for approximately one hour. The thing you definitely meant to sort out that is still, somehow, not sorted. These aren’t signs of laziness or not caring. They’re often signs that executive functions like planning, task initiation, and organisation need a little more support.

This might sound familiar if...

What's going on

Which executive functions may be involved

Home life calls on almost every executive function skill there is, often at the same time, and often without any external structure to support you. It’s one of the reasons it can feel so much harder than work or school, where there are deadlines, routines, and other people to help keep things moving.

The EF skills that tend to show up most in home life include:

Home is often where EF challenges are most visible. This is because there’s no manager, no deadline, and no external structure to carry you. Everything relies on you creating and maintaining your own systems.

What could be different

What changes when you understand your executive functions

The goal isn’t a spotless home or a perfect routine. It’s building systems that work with how your brain actually operates. Aiming for a home that’s somewhere you can actually rest, rather than somewhere that makes you feel like you’re failing.

Less guilt, more self-understanding

Understanding why things feel hard takes a lot of the shame out of the equation.

A NOTE ON POSSIBILITY - NEUROPLASTICITY

What neuroplasticity means for you

For a long time, it was believed that the brain was largely fixed by adulthood. We now know that Neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form new connections and adapt, continues throughout life.

It does take longer in adults than in children, and it requires consistent, repeated practice rather than a single step. But, it is possible! The strategies we co-create in coaching aren’t just workarounds (although you may choose to make some environmental adaptions) they’re ways of gradually rewiring how your brain approaches the things that have always felt hard.

Understanding your executive functions is where that process begins.
